Job Details

Reporting to the Vice President, Safety, this position plays a pivotal role in leading Trimac’s incident investigation and organizational learning systems.

 

We are seeking a strategic and collaborative leader to drive meaningful change through high-consequence incident reviews, clear communication of learnings, and implementation of corrective actions in partnership with the Director, Safety Execution.

 

This role will focus on governing investigation standards, publishing actionable insights, and reducing serious harm across the organization. The Director will also lead the evaluation and development of emerging safety technologies, software, and tools to enhance operational safety and learning.

 

The Director will also provide leadership to a Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) and a Manager of Safety Programs. This team plays a critical role in advancing safety innovation, training, and continuous improvement across the organization.

 

Who You Are

  • Proven investigation/RCA facilitation and practical change leadership.
  • Application of safety principles across diverse operational environments, demonstrating adaptability and strategic insight.
  • Proficiency with telematics systems, video analytics, Electronic Logging Devices (ELDs), fleet maintenance platforms, and business intelligence tools such as Power BI and Excel.
  • Proven leadership experience managing teams across geographically dispersed or multi-site operations, with a focus on consistency, engagement, and performance alignment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with a demonstrated ability to build stakeholder buy-in and effectively convey complex information to diverse audiences.
  • Ability to influence and engage leaders across all levels of the organization, fostering alignment and driving strategic initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Govern the investigation playbook; launch and coach High Consequence investigations; ensure strong evidence capture and human‑factors/System RCA.
  • Turn findings into actionable recommendations; track CAPA to closure and verify effectiveness.
  • Develop an investigation quality standard and execute.
  • Train field staff in investigation techniques, procedures and best practices.
  • Publish learning bulletins and maintain a searchable lessons‑learned library, update programs and training through the Manager of Safety Programs.
  • Lead Safety Tech R&D: scan, vet, pilot, and analyze impact/ROI for video/telematics analytics, fatigue/distraction, training, rollover prevention, IH monitoring, and related controls.
  • Lead Safety Due Diligence for M&A: risk review, incident/regulatory posture, with short term and long-term integration plans.
  • Ensure the right Drivers are put through Driving Simulator training, and curriculum matches accident and near miss experience.
  • Partner with Operations, Maintenance, Claims/Legal, BI/Analytics, Compliance, and Learning & Development.
  • This position would be based at a major North American hub, hybrid work model, and approximately 20% travel required.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Human Factors, Transportation Safety, Engineering, or related field. 
  •  
  • 8+ years in safety leadership within high‑consequence operations (transport, energy, industrial).
  • Regulatory and Safety knowledge in Canada and U.S. is required.
  • Professional certification such as Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), or Certified Process Safety Professional (CCPS) is an asset.
  • Knowledge of Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) / transport regulations (U.S. and Canada) and compliance frameworks, including federal and provincial standards governed by PHMSA (Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration), FMCSA (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration), and relevant provincial transportation authorities.
  • Demonstrated experience conducting due diligence in Mergers & Acquisitions (M&A) activities, particularly in assessing safety, compliance, and operational risks during organizational transitions.

 

ACCOUNTABILITY METRICS

  • 90% High Consequence Event (HCE) investigations completed ≤15 days.
  • 90% quality score on Critical Investigations.
  • Scope: Investigate all rollovers and any distraction/fatigue‑suspected event at highway speed.
  • Quarterly Investigation & Learning Report: quality results, safety campaign summaries, top causal/contributing factors, recommendations, and execution status (work w/ Director, Safety Execution).
