Job Details

We are seeking a strategic and collaborative Director, Safety Execution to lead front-line safety efforts, strengthen partnerships with Operations, and drive continuous improvement in safety culture and product-handling quality.

 

This role will focus on ensuring Safety Specialists prioritize high impact activities, implement recommendations from the Director, Investigation & Learning, and deliver measurable safety outcomes across terminals, lanes, and customer interactions.

 

The Director, Safety Execution also leads a geographically distributed team, including three Regional Safety Managers (Truckline) across the U.S. and Canada, 26 Safety Specialists deployed based on driver density (~85 drivers per Specialist), and the Manager, National Tank Services (NTS) responsible for wash rack and shop safety, supported by two NTS Safety Specialists.

 

This role requires strong leadership, coordination, and alignment across diverse operational environments.

Who You Are

  • Strong familiarity with in-cab video systems, telematics, Electronic Logging Devices (ELDs), and behavior-based coaching methodologies to proactively manage and improve driver safety performance.
  • Working knowledge of Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) regulations across the U.S. and Canada, including safety standards related to product handling, terminal/shop operations, and safety.
  • Proven ability to collaborate closely with Operations teams, ensuring safety strategies are integrated into daily workflows and communicated effectively to drivers and customers using clear, and plain language.
  • Experience in aligning safety staffing models with driver and technician density to optimize field coverage and impact.
  • Ability to drive safety strategy execution across field operations, ensuring front-line Safety Specialists focus on high-impact activities and implement recommendations from Investigation & Learning.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate complex safety concepts into actionable guidance for diverse audiences.
  • Knowledge of cargo tank operations and chemical handling protocols.

Responsibilities

  • Deploy & direct field resources: Assign Regional Safety Managers/Specialists to highest‑risk locations and customers; maintain ~85 drivers/Specialist and adjust coverage when necessary.
  • Execute recommendations from Investigation & Learning; ensure corrective actions are implemented and verified effectively. Field staff investigate lower‑severity events and manage corrective actions.
  • Run the monthly Top/Bottom 20% process: recognition for top performers; structured coaching & improvement plans for at‑risk drivers; track results and remove obstacles.
  • Lead in‑cab coaching: Set standards for video/telematics review, ride‑along, coaching conversations, and follow‑ups; Find the signal - measure patterns, behavior change and reduce repeat risky events.
  • NTS oversight: Provide safety leadership for wash racks/shops via the NTS Manager; ensure audits, product‑handling safety, technician training, and incident prevention. Ensure Industrial Hygiene programs are properly implemented and maintained.
  • Audits & inspections: Terminals, equipment, and customer sites; meet customer‑required safety initiatives and documentation standards.
  • Operations & customer engagement: Participate in ops meetings, toolbox talks, and customer reviews; communicate learnings plainly; support launches/start‑ups and seasonal risk plans.
  • Data & dashboards: Monitor risky events, coaching completion/effectiveness, improvement‑plan progress, audit findings, and injury/accident trends; publish results and drive action.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Transportation Safety, Operations, Engineering, or related field. 
  • 8+ years leading multi‑site field safety teams in trucking/industrial services; proven results reducing incidents through coaching and execution.
  • Professional safety certification such as Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP), or Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST) is an asset.
  • Experience in transportation safety within high-risk or regulated environments.
  • Demonstrated success in enhancing safety culture, improving product-handling quality, and achieving measurable safety outcomes across terminals, lanes, and customer interfaces.
